A home built from the ground around it

Glaumbær’s turf walls hold a story of materials, shared rooms and a household that remained here until 1947.

At Glaumbær, turf was a practical building material: suitable stone was scarce on the farm, while good turf was available. Driftwood and imported timber supplied framing and interior woodwork. The connected buildings made a working household, with a passage leading through the complex to the communal living room, the baðstofa.

The last residents left in 1947, the year the farmhouse was formally protected. Its museum exhibition opened in 1952. Seen through that history, the grass-covered roofs become more than a picturesque outline. They belong to a home shaped by local resources and everyday needs, preserved close enough to living memory that its final household and its museum life almost touch.
