The children and the stone bridge

The name Barnafoss carries a sorrowful tale about two children and a vanished natural arch.

A local legend tells of two children left at home while their parents attended Christmas church services. When the family returned, the children were missing. Their tracks led toward a natural stone bridge over the river, where the trail ended. The tale says their mother had the arch destroyed so that no one else would suffer the same fate.

Barnafoss means the children’s waterfall. Read the story beside the maintained paths shared with nearby Hraunfossar, rather than looking for a crossing from the legend. This is a traditional account of the name, with variations in its telling; it does not establish a verified accident site or date.

Water appears from inside the lava

At Hraunfossar, clear groundwater emerges through lava in many small cascades above the Hvítá.

Hraunfossar rewards a small puzzle: where is the river feeding all these falls? Clear, cold groundwater seeps through the lava and emerges across the bank in many little streams. The cascades collect in the much larger Hvítá below, revealing a hidden part of the water’s journey.

From the viewpoint, trace one thread of water back toward the dark openings in the rock. Then let your eyes move along the whole bank. Instead of following one dramatic drop, you are watching a landscape release water through countless small exits. The roadside viewpoint makes this a simple place to pause and read the connection between rock and water.
