Did you know?
The black sand and hexagonal basalt columns at Reynisfjara come from Reynisfjall, a 340-metre-high tuff mountain built by a volcanic eruption under a glacier during Iceland's second-to-last ice age.

The black shore of Eastwatch
Reynisfjara’s black beach helped create Eastwatch-by-the-Sea in Game of Thrones.
Reynisfjara supplied the black coastal landscape for Eastwatch-by-the-Sea in Game of Thrones. Eastwatch is a fictional outpost, but the beach, basalt formations and Atlantic shoreline belong to the real landscape beside Vík. The shore gives the imagined frontier much of its stark character.
Look at how the dark ground meets the pale surf and sky: there is a whole scene in that contrast of textures. Enjoy it from the permitted visitor area, well back from the water. This is an exposed ocean beach; follow the warning lights and local restrictions while taking in the view.
