A quiet coast with a global crystal story

Near Djúpivogur, Teigarhorn’s zeolites have travelled into scientific collections around the world.

Teigarhorn is known for zeolites: minerals whose crystals made this coastal site important to collectors and researchers. Samples from here reached museums abroad in the eighteenth century, and the minerals have been studied for more than two hundred years. The main collecting sites have been protected since 1976.

The story changes how you look at a modest stretch of Eastfjords coast. A rock can connect a local landscape to a museum drawer and a scientific question far away. Visit the reserve to appreciate that connection, leaving stones and crystals in place. The ranger and interpretation on site can help explain what makes the formations significant.
