Tour Description

Guarded on both sides by monumental bird cliffs, the Hornvík creek is Iceland’s most remote place, and also one of its most beautiful.
Hornbjarg is the larger and more extreme shaped of the two cliffs and boasts of an unrivaled “edge of the world” experience.

The Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and Hornbjarg are only accessible by boat (or foot) and the 2.5-3 hour one-way boat ride is filled with spectacular views of the dramatic cliffs and coastline.

Please note that about 4-6 hours on this tour are spent hiking in Hornvík, and the other 4-6 hours transferring by a passenger ferry between Hornvík and Bolungarvík.

The trail requires at least basic hiking experience and good fitness. On a windy day, the boat ride can be bumpy. Exact return time back to Bolungarvík is always uncertain but normally the tour duration does not exceed 12 hours.

The tour starts from Bolungarvík harbor, which is just a 10-15 minute drive from Ísafjörður town and about a 20-minute drive from Ísafjörður airport. The boat departs 15 minutes after the scheduled tour starting time.

The 4-6 hour return boat ride offers great views of the dramatic landscape of northern Hornstrandir and stops for a quick view of the other grand cliff in Hornvík: Hælavíkurbjarg.

At Hornbjarg, you will have 4-6 hours to hike along Hornbjarg and enjoy the magnificent views. The tour takes you on a circle hike onto the cliffs and back. The hiking is of intermediate difficulty on a trail with undulating terrain, from sea level up to about 500 meters altitude and down again to sea level.

The cliffs host about 50 species of seabirds including guillemots, razorbills, eiders, puffins, kittiwakes, and fulmars.
And if we’re lucky, we might also see the beautiful arctic fox from up close.

Plan B

In case of bad sailing weather to reach Hornvík we will offer a visit to the charming Hesteyri village in the Hornstrandir nature reserve as a replacement to the main plan.
