The tunnel is located less than 30 minutes drive (approximately 30 km) from Reykjavík and accessible by all vehicles. Driving from Reykjavík east on Route 1 and drive for about 18 km. Turn right onto Route 39 (Þorlákshöfn) and drive for another 12 km. The parking area will be on your left-hand side. You can also view the exact location on google maps. Navigate through the wonderous lava tunnel Raufarholshellir, one of the longest and best-
known lava tubes in Iceland. Just a short 30-minute drive from Reykjavik, this natural wonder is
easily accessible all year round.

5.200 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption forced tons of molten lava through the earth,
forming a 1.300-metre long lava tube. This tube is known as Raufarholshellir and is the longest
lava tunnel in Iceland. Exploring this natural phenomenon is a unique experience and a great
opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption, as one gets to follow the path
of the lava that flowed all those centuries ago.

In the forefront of the cave, a collapse in the cave-ceiling has formed three natural skylights that send rays of sunlight shooting through the cave and onto the rock bed below. As winter sets in and frost and snow grip the landscape, huge ice sculptures from inside the cave making the visit a truly wondrous and unique experience.
